§101304 Personal Equipment and Property

Summary

The Secretary can buy personal gear and supplies for Service employees and can take the cost out of the money set aside for pay or other amounts owed to the employee. If horses, vehicles, or other equipment are lost, damaged, or destroyed while under an employee’s or the Department’s control and used under an authorization, contract, or loan for firefighting, trail work, or other official work, the owner can be paid back. That payment comes from the fund that would normally pay to hire that kind of equipment. The Secretary can require field workers to provide horses, vehicles, and other needed gear. The Government will pay for animal feed, care, and housing, and for storage or fuel for required vehicles and equipment. The Secretary can also allow hiring, renting, or buying property from employees under rules the Secretary sets when it serves the public interest.
