Title 54 › Subtitle Subtitle III— National Preservation Programs › Chapter 3121— NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN THE UNITED STATES › § 312104
A board of trustees runs the National Trust. It must include the Attorney General, the Secretary, and the Director of the National Gallery of Art as members because of their jobs, plus at least 6 general trustees who are U.S. citizens. The Attorney General and the Secretary may, in writing, name an officer from their department to serve for them. The board sets how many general trustees there will be, and Trust members elect them at regular meetings. Terms are set by the board but cannot be longer than 5 years from the election date. A successor is chosen the same way and normally serves until 5 years after the prior term ended; if filling a vacancy, they serve only the rest of that term. The board elects the chair by a majority vote. Trustees are not paid for their service but are paid back for travel and actual expenses for meetings and official duties when the board asks.
