The Under Secretary for Management must run and oversee the Department’s health and medical work for its people and animals. The Under Secretary can give parts of that job to others when needed. Working with the Chief Medical Officer, the Under Secretary must coordinate medical and health activities; set medical, veterinary, and workplace exposure policies and plans; can provide medical experts to components on a reimbursable basis; act as the main contact for agreements that assign Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officers to the Department (while each component keeps authority over funding, specific duties, and supervision); and carry out other related tasks the Secretary requires.
