Title 7 › Chapter 6A— NATIONAL LABORATORY ACCREDITATION › § 138f
Laboratories that apply for or keep accreditation under the laws named, including the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act, must pay a nonrefundable fee when they apply and every year. The Secretary sets the fee so it will cover the cost of the accreditation program. Fees go into the program’s account and stay available until spent, but they cannot be used unless appropriations are made each fiscal year. Labs must also repay reasonable travel and other costs for onsite inspections. The Secretary can change the fees each year to cover the program’s full costs. Congress is authorized to appropriate whatever sums are needed each fiscal year for these accreditation services.
