Title 7 › Chapter 48— HUMANE METHODS OF LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTER › § 1904
The Secretary must run and support research and tests to find practical and humane ways to slaughter animals and to handle them during slaughter, taking into account how fast and how much slaughtering is done and current scientific knowledge. By March 1, 1959, and whenever he thinks it is needed after that, the Secretary must name which methods to use for each kind of livestock that match the chapter’s policy. If he thinks it will work better, he may instead name methods that do not match the policy. Any methods named after March 1, 1959 take effect 180 days after they are published in the Federal Register.
