§229b Right to Discuss Terms of Contract

Title 7 › Chapter 9— PACKERS AND STOCKYARDS › Subchapter V— GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 229b

Last updated Apr 3, 2026|Official source

Summary

Even if a contract or a marketing agreement of 1 year or more is labeled confidential, a producer or processor may still discuss contract terms with a Federal or State agency, their lawyer, their lender, a hired accountant, a manager or executive, their landlord, or an immediate family member. Producer: someone who raises livestock or poultry for slaughter. Processor: someone who obtains livestock or poultry for slaughter. This does not override State laws unless a State law would let a contract block these talks, and State courts keep authority. Covers contracts made, amended, renewed, or extended after May 13, 2002.
