§2702 Definitions

Defines the main words used in this chapter about eggs and the egg business. Secretary is the Secretary of Agriculture or someone at the Department of Agriculture given the same authority. Person is any individual, group, business, organization, cooperative, or other entity. Commercial eggs or eggs are eggs from domesticated chickens sold for people to eat, either as shell eggs or to be made into egg products. Hen or laying hen is a domesticated female chicken 20 weeks of age or over raised mainly to produce commercial eggs. Egg producer is the person who owns laying hens that make commercial eggs. Case is a standard shipping package containing thirty dozen eggs. Hatching eggs are eggs meant for hatcheries to produce baby chicks. United States means the forty-eight contiguous States and the District of Columbia. Promotion, research, and consumer education all mean actions (promotion can include paid ads) to improve the image, desirability, marketability, production, or quality of eggs, egg products, spent fowl, or products of spent fowl. Marketing means the sale or other disposition of those items in any channel of commerce. Commerce means interstate, foreign, or intrastate commerce. Egg products are products made wholly or partly from eggs. Spent fowl are hens taken out of egg production for slaughter, and products of spent fowl are commercial goods made from them. Hatchery operator is anyone producing egg-type baby chicks. Started pullet is a hen less than twenty weeks of age, and a started pullet dealer sells started pullets. Handler is any person listed in the order or its rules who receives eggs from a producer and processes, prepares for market, or markets those eggs, including their own.
