The Secretary of Agriculture must create the National Agricultural Science Award to support research and advanced study in the food and agricultural sciences, including the social sciences. Two awards are given each fiscal year, one in each category. Each award can provide up to $50,000 per year for up to three years to help the winner do research or study. People in agricultural research, extension, teaching, or any mix of those can be eligible. The Secretary can set up committees of scientists and others to accept nominations and recommend winners. Category 1: a scientist honored for major contributions that advance the field. Category 2: an early-career research scientist or a graduate student honored for demonstrated ability and promise of significant future achievement.
