§6510 Handling

Title 7 › Chapter 94— ORGANIC CERTIFICATION › § 6510

Last updated Apr 3, 2026|Official source

Summary

To get organic handling certification, people who handle covered agricultural products must follow rules that keep products organic. They cannot add any synthetic ingredient that is not on the National List. They cannot add ingredients with nitrates, heavy metals, or toxic residues above the levels allowed by the organic program. They cannot add sulfites (except in wine), nitrates, or nitrites. They cannot add nonorganic ingredients unless those ingredients are on the National List and make up no more than 5 percent of the finished product by weight (salt and water not counted). They cannot use packaging, storage, or containers that contain synthetic fungicides, preservatives, or fumigants, or containers that were previously contaminated so the organic quality is harmed. They must use product water that meets all Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. Farms and handlers also must keep organically produced meat from touching nonorganic meat to keep certification.
