The Attorney General can take three kinds of legal action under this law. He or she can file criminal charges in the United States when the Secretary refers a violation or anyone reports one. The Attorney General can ask a court to stop a violation, make someone follow the rules, or stop anyone from interfering with the Secretary when the Secretary has reason to believe a violation or interference is happening or about to happen. The Attorney General can also sue to collect unpaid civil penalties, money owed under reimbursable agreements, late payment penalties, and any interest assessed under the law.
