The U.S. General Services Administration is upgrading and expanding the Lynden and Sumas border crossings in Washington to make travel and trade smoother, safer, and faster. These improvements will help Customs and Border Protection handle more traffic and work better every day. The projects started on December 27, 2024, and will boost security and efficiency for everyone crossing between the U.S. and Canada.

ROD Approves Lynden & Sumas Upgrades
On December 27, 2024, GSA issued a Record of Decision approving modernization and expansion projects for the Lynden and Sumas Land Ports of Entry. The projects are intended to increase functionality, capacity, operational efficiency, effectiveness, security, sustainability, and safety to make travel and trade at these crossings smoother, safer, and faster.
Lynden Expansion May Take Farmland
GSA selected Lynden LPOE Alternative 3 (North-South Oriented LPOE Expansion), which would involve potential acquisition of primarily agricultural land to the west of the Lynden LPOE and site work. The maximum proposed limits of disturbance for this alternative are approximately 10.3 acres.
Sumas Multi-Story Expansion and Safety Additions
GSA selected Sumas LPOE Alternative 4 (Multi-Story Construction LPOE Expansion), which would involve potential acquisition of land south and east of the Sumas LPOE and a maximum proposed limits of disturbance of approximately 12.9 acres. This alternative would consolidate operational space, use a smaller footprint, and add a pedestrian bridge to increase employee safety.
Construction Sequencing Could Cause Detours/Delays
The Final EIS evaluated two construction sequencing options. Under the Concurrent Construction Option both ports would remain open but pedestrian and POV access could be limited, POVs may be shifted to COV lanes for limited times, and commercial owned vehicles (COVs) may be detoured at times. Under the Sequential Construction Option, the Lynden LPOE could be detoured for the majority of its construction (with subsequent work at Sumas), and COVs would be detoured from Sumas during portions of construction.
