19 Drivers Kept on Road While Medicated
If you are one of the 19 commercial drivers with epilepsy or seizure disorders listed in this notice, FMCSA renewed your exemption allowing you to drive interstate while taking anti-seizure medication. The exemptions apply in three groups: 11 drivers from January 1, 2025 to January 1, 2027; 1 driver from January 11, 2025 to January 11, 2027; and 7 drivers from January 25, 2025 to January 25, 2027.
Medical Monitoring and Reporting Required
Drivers granted these exemptions must remain seizure-free, report any seizure to FMCSA within 24 hours, submit annual treating-physician reports and an annual medical exam by a certified medical examiner, provide annual certified driving records, report crashes within 7 days, and report citations/convictions within 7 days. Each exemption is valid for 2 years unless rescinded earlier.
Federal Exemption Preempts Conflicting State Laws
While an FMCSA exemption is in effect for a driver, no State may enforce a law or regulation that conflicts with that exemption for that driver. This prevents state rules from blocking a driver's federally authorized interstate operations during the exemption period.
