From January 18 to 21, 2025, the Coast Guard will block off parts of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers in Washington, DC, to keep government officials safe during the 60th Presidential Inauguration. Boats can’t enter or stay in these waters unless they get special permission. This temporary security zone helps prevent threats and keeps everyone safe without any fees involved.

Boats barred from Potomac & Anacostia

From 8:00 a.m. on January 18, 2025 through 11:59 p.m. on January 21, 2025, the Coast Guard will prohibit entry into or remaining in the security zones on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers unless you are authorized by the Captain of the Port. The zones cover navigable waters described in 33 CFR 165.508(a)(1)-(3), including waters between the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the Woodrow Wilson Memorial (I-95/I-495) Bridge and parts of the Washington Channel and Boundary Channel.

Who may stay, who must depart

Public vessels and vessels already at berth when the security zone is implemented do not have to depart the zone. Any vessel underway inside the zone at the time enforcement begins must depart at that time, and permission to transit can be requested by calling (410) 576-2693 or on Marine Band Radio, VHF-FM channel 16 (156.8 MHz).
