Alaska Shuffles Fish Quotas Because Jig Fishermen Aren't Jigging Enough

Published Date: 1/7/2025

Rule

Summary

Starting January 2, 2025, some Pacific cod that jig fishing boats won’t catch in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands will be given to smaller catcher vessels using hook-and-line or pot gear. This switch helps make sure the 2025 Pacific cod catch limit is fully used, benefiting smaller boats and keeping the fishery active all year. The change lasts through December 31, 2025, with no extra costs involved.

1,000 mt Added to Small Catcher Vessels

From January 2, 2025 through December 31, 2025, NMFS moved 1,000 metric tons (mt) of Pacific cod from the A season jig allocation to catcher vessels less than 60 feet (18.3 m) length overall (LOA) using hook-and-line or pot gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands (BSAI). The allocation for those catcher vessels is revised to 3,525 mt for 2025.

Jig Gear A-Season Allocation Reduced by 1,000 mt

For 2025, the A season apportionment of Pacific cod for vessels using jig gear in the BSAI is reduced by 1,000 mt (from the previously specified 1,067 mt to 67 mt for the A season), and the annual amount for jig gear is revised to 779 mt. This reallocation is effective January 2, 2025 through December 31, 2025.
