Qualification of Drivers; Exemption Applications; Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders

Published Date: 1/15/2025

Notice

Summary

The FMCSA is renewing special permissions for eight drivers with epilepsy or seizure disorders, letting them keep driving commercial trucks across state lines while on medication. This means folks who’ve had seizures but are managing their condition safely can keep working without breaking the rules. These renewals have specific start and end dates, so drivers and companies should keep an eye on those to stay compliant.

Exemptions Let Eight Drivers Keep Driving

If you are one of the eight named commercial drivers, FMCSA renewed your exemption allowing you to operate interstate commercial motor vehicles while taking anti-seizure medication. Seven drivers (Jesse Hansen, Thomas Kline, Jose Lara-Ramirez, Domenick Panfile, Andrew Rieschick, Stephen St. Marthe, Carsten Thode) have exemptions effective December 12, 2024 that expire December 12, 2026; Kyle Loney has an exemption effective December 16, 2024 that expires December 16, 2026.

Two-Year Term and Revocation Conditions

Each exemption is valid for 2 years from its effective date and will be revoked earlier if the driver fails to follow the exemption terms, the exemption causes a lower level of safety than before, or continuation would conflict with 49 U.S.C. 31136(e) and 31315(b). The renewals therefore require drivers and carriers to track the expiration dates (December 12, 2026 or December 16, 2026) and comply with the exemption conditions to avoid loss of driving privileges.
