AmeriCorps State and National Updates

Published Date: 1/17/2025

Rule

Summary

AmeriCorps just made it easier for members to get living allowances and benefits by letting funding cover up to four terms or until they earn two full-time education awards—whichever takes longer. This change helps members serve longer without worrying about losing support. The new rule kicks in on January 17, 2025, giving AmeriCorps members more time and flexibility to serve and learn.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Longer AmeriCorps-funded Service Periods

If you serve in AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps funding can now pay your living allowances and other member benefits for the longer of (a) the time it takes you to earn the aggregate value of two full-time Segal Education Awards or (b) four terms of service. This rule takes effect January 17, 2025.

Grantees Decide on Extra Funding Burden

AmeriCorps programs (grantees) may choose whether to fund member living allowances and benefits for any terms beyond the AmeriCorps-funded limit (the longer of two full-time education awards or four terms). AmeriCorps notes programs should base that decision on their financial capacity.

Funding Through Completion If Award Earned Mid-Term

If you earn the aggregate value of two full-time education awards mid-way through a term and you have already served four terms, AmeriCorps will continue to fund your service through the completion of that term.

Agency Says Small Entities Not Significantly Hurt

AmeriCorps certifies under the Regulatory Flexibility Act that this rule will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities; most AmeriCorps State and National grantees are State Commissions or organizations that do not meet the definition of a small entity.
