38,617 Funerary Objects Identified
Sonoma State University completed an inventory of 38,617 associated funerary objects from multiple California archaeological sites and determined they are culturally affiliated with the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. These items (listed by site and accession numbers in the notice) are identified for repatriation.
Repatriation Eligibility and Process
Written requests for repatriation must be sent to the Sonoma State University contact (Doshia Dodd) and may be submitted by any one or more of the tribes/native Hawaiian organizations identified in the notice, or by a lineal descendant or other tribe/organization that proves cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. If competing requests are received, Sonoma State University must determine the most appropriate requestor; repatriation may occur on or after February 18, 2025.
Items Found Free of Hazardous Treatment
Records indicate there is no evidence that the 38,617 associated funerary objects were treated with hazardous substances. This information is noted in the inventory and related records.
