Textile fragment to be returned
Michigan State University intends to repatriate one preserved textile fragment (catalog number 2002.29.27) removed from the Sumnerville Mound (20CS6) in Pokagon Township, Cass County, Michigan. The object has been identified by a preponderance of the evidence as culturally affiliated with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, and the university intends to return it.
Repatriation timing set
The repatriation may occur on or after February 18, 2025. That date is the earliest the university may transfer the cultural item described in this notice.
Who may request repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation; competing requests must be resolved by Michigan State University to determine the most appropriate requestor.
