Museum to Return 26 Maidu Items
The Longyear Museum of Anthropology at Colgate University intends to repatriate 26 Native American unassociated funerary objects (25 discoidal clamshell wampum beads and one abalone shell pendant) removed from a Prehistoric Maidu cremation burial at Bennett Mound, Sacramento County. Repatriation may occur on or after February 18, 2025, and the notice states there is no known presence of hazardous substances and no costs expected for the public.
Who May Request Repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request to the Longyear Museum to receive the repatriation by demonstrating, by a preponderance of the evidence, cultural affiliation. Competing requests must be resolved by the museum before repatriation; joint requests are treated as a single request. Repatriation may occur on or after February 18, 2025.
