Summary

The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands plans to return the remains of one Native American ancestor and a special arrowhead found in Sioux County, Nebraska, to the right Tribe or descendants. This will happen after February 18, 2025, unless no one claims them by January 16, 2026, then they’ll be considered unclaimed. This respectful action honors Native American heritage and follows important laws protecting their ancestors.

Remains to be Returned to Oglala Sioux

The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands intends to return the human remains (one individual) and an associated projectile point found in Sioux County, Nebraska (removed November 17, 2021) to the Oglala Sioux Tribe, which has priority for disposition. Disposition may occur on or after February 18, 2025.

Claims Deadline and Unclaimed Status

Anyone with a claim must submit it before January 16, 2026; if no claim is received by that date the human remains and associated funerary object will be considered unclaimed. Competing claims must be resolved by the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands before disposition, and requests for joint disposition are treated as a single request.
