Priority return to four named tribes

The USDA-Cibola National Forest intends to return the human remains of one Native American individual to the Hopi Tribe, Pueblo of Acoma, Pueblo of Laguna, or the Zuni Tribe. The remains were recovered in 1992 from a site in the Zuni Mountains, Cibola County, New Mexico.

Claims deadline and unclaimed designation

Written claims for disposition must be received by January 20, 2026; disposition may occur on or after February 18, 2025. If no claim is received by January 20, 2026, the human remains will be designated as unclaimed human remains.

Who may file for disposition and joint-claim rule

Written claims may be submitted by any lineal descendant, the Indian Tribes named in this notice, or a Native Hawaiian organization identified in this notice; others may claim if they show by a preponderance of the evidence they have priority. Requests for joint disposition are treated as a single request and not competing requests.
