Data Supports Fishery Management Amendments

NOAA says the socio-economic data from this census will be used to develop amendments to fishery management plans and to satisfy analyses and legal mandates under the Magnuson-Stevens Act, NEPA, the Endangered Species Act, the Regulatory Flexibility Act, and Executive Order 12866. The study will collect demographics, capital investment, fishing practices, economic performance, crew dynamics, and attitudes.

Census Targets 1,500 Caribbean Fishermen

The NOAA survey will collect information from about 1,500 small-scale commercial fishermen who operate in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each respondent would spend about 45 minutes completing the survey; the collection totals 1,125 annual burden hours and is conducted annually. Participation is voluntary, and the public has 30 days from the notice to comment before the submission moves forward.
