Universities Can Import Scientific Gear Duty-Free

If you are a researcher or work for a university, several institutions (Arizona State University, University of Colorado, Cornell, Tulane, Harvard, University of Chicago, and UC Santa Barbara) applied to import advanced scientific instruments duty-free under section 6(c) of the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Materials Importation Act. Applicants say there are no U.S.-manufactured instruments of the same general category for items including an ultra-high-pressure multi-anvil apparatus, thulium-doped fiber lasers, a soft X-ray scientific CMOS camera, and a multi-collector high-resolution inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The public may submit comments on these duty-free entry requests by February 18, 2025.
