Federal DEI Programs Axed as Wasteful and Unfair
Published Date: 1/29/2025
Presidential Document
Summary
The government is ending all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs that it calls wasteful and unfair. Federal agencies must stop using DEI rules in hiring, training, and contracts within 60 days. This change affects all federal workers and aims to save taxpayer money by focusing on skills and hard work instead of DEI goals.

Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.
Federal DEI Offices and Positions Ended
Federal agencies must terminate, within 60 days of this January 20, 2025 order, all DEI, DEIA, and “environmental justice” offices and positions (including but not limited to Chief Diversity Officer roles) and related DEI performance requirements to the maximum extent allowed by law. Agencies must identify positions, programs, budgets, and expenditures that existed on November 4, 2024 as part of this process.
DEI Contracts and Grants Targeted for Termination
Agencies must, within 60 days, terminate to the maximum extent allowed by law DEI- and equity-related grants, contracts, and set-asides, and provide OMB with lists of Federal contractors who provided DEI training and Federal grantees that received funding for DEI or environmental justice programs since January 20, 2021. This directs agencies to stop funding or contracting for DEI-related services and programs.
DEI Removed from Federal Employee Evaluations
Federal employment practices and performance reviews must not consider DEI or DEIA factors and must instead reward individual initiative, skills, performance, and hard work. Agencies must revise employment practices and training policies as appropriate, with these changes to be coordinated by OPM and OMB.
