Putting People Over Fish: Reviving California Water Deliveries Now

Published Date: 1/30/2025

Presidential Document

Summary

The President is ordering federal agencies to restart a plan that sends more water from Northern California’s rivers to Southern California, where people really need it. This change stops strict environmental rules that blocked water use to protect fish, letting more water flow to homes and farms instead of the ocean. Agencies must report back within 90 days on their progress, aiming to fix water shortages and help prevent wildfires.

More Northern California Water Routed South

On January 20, 2025 the President ordered federal agencies to restart a plan to route more water from the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta to the Central Valley and Southern California so homes and farms there get a more reliable water supply. The memorandum says agencies should immediately resume work to send water that previously flowed into the Pacific Ocean for use in those regions.

Water to Support Wildfire and Vegetation Management

The memorandum directs agencies to reimplement the water-routing plan to help fix water shortages and support sound vegetation management in Southern California, which the text links to helping prevent deadly wildfires. Agencies were told to report progress within 90 days of January 20, 2025.
