Airbus Planes Get Crack-Checking Schedule Shake-Up

Published Date: 2/27/2025

Proposed Rule

Summary

If you fly or work with certain Airbus A321 models, this update means inspections for cracks in the cabin floor beam need to happen on a new schedule based on flight hours. The FAA is keeping the old safety checks but adding options to fix issues sooner. These changes help keep planes safe without causing big delays or costs.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Flight‑hour inspection timing change

The FAA proposes to supersede AD 2017-14-14 for Airbus SAS Model A321-111, -112, -131, -211, -212, -213, -231, and -232 airplanes and revise inspection compliance times so they are based on flight hours. The rule would still require inspections for cracking in the cabin floor beam junction at specified fuselage frame locations, but the timing would follow flight‑hour thresholds.

Repetitive inspections remain required

The proposed AD would continue to require the repetitive inspections and repair actions that AD 2017-14-14 currently mandates for the same A321 models. Operators must still inspect for cracking in the cabin floor beam junction and repair any findings as required by the AD.

Optional modification provision added

The proposed AD would add a provision allowing optional modifications as specified in a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD that the FAA proposes to incorporate by reference. Operators would have the option to perform those modifications as provided in the referenced EASA AD.
