Proposed Flood Map Changes May Alter Insurance
FEMA is proposing changes to flood maps that may add or change Base Flood Elevations (BFE), base flood depths, Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) boundaries or zone designations, or regulatory floodways on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and supporting Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports. If you live or work in an affected community, these map updates might change flood insurance rules and costs for properties in those areas. FEMA is asking for public comments on those preliminary FIRMs and FIS reports.
Community Must Adopt Measures to Keep NFIP Eligibility
The preliminary FIRM and FIS reports are the basis for floodplain management measures that a community is required to adopt or show evidence of having in effect in order to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Communities that do not adopt or maintain those measures may risk their NFIP participation status, which is tied to flood insurance availability and local requirements.
