SEC Approves Options on Three Ether Funds
On April 9, 2025 the SEC approved (on an accelerated basis) a NYSE American rule change allowing the listing and trading of options on the Bitwise Ethereum ETF (ETHW), the Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE), and the Grayscale Ethereum Mini Trust (ETH). If you hold or trade these funds, you can now buy and sell options tied to their shares on NYSE American.
25,000-Contract Position Limit Set
The Exchange set a 25,000-contract position and exercise limit for options on each Ether Fund. That limit means a same-side holder could at most control the equivalent of 2,500,000 underlying shares via exercise under the proposed limit.
Ether Fund Options Excluded from FLEX Trading
The Exchange will not permit the Ether Fund options to trade as FLEX options under Rule 903G(a)(1); the Ether Funds are explicitly excluded from FLEX trading. That means customized FLEX option contracts will not be available for these funds unless a future rule filing changes this.
Trading Terms: Physical Settlement and Strikes
Options on the Ether Funds will be physically settled with American-style exercise. Strike price intervals will be $1 or greater for strikes at $200 or less and $5 or greater for strikes over $200; penny/other strike programs (e.g., $1, $0.50, $2.50, $5) and weekly/monthly/quarterly expirations and LEAPS (12–39 months) may apply per Exchange rules.
Margin Rules Apply to Ether Fund Options
Rule 462 margin requirements applicable to all options on the Exchange will also apply to options on the Ether Funds. If you trade these options, typical options margin rules will govern margin and capital requirements.
Conditions That Could Suspend Ether Fund Options
The Exchange may suspend opening new series or suspend trading in Ether Fund options if the fund ceases to be an NMS stock or is halted; additionally, after the initial 12-month trading period, options may be suspended if the fund has fewer than 50 record/beneficial holders for 30 or more consecutive trading days or if the value of the underlying commodity is no longer calculated or available.
Exchange Surveillance and Oversight Support
Amendment No. 2 supplements information about the Exchange's surveillance program and describes how the Exchange would surveil suspicious trading activity in the underlying Ether Funds as part of permitting options on these funds.
