Pipeline Dreams: Feds Seek Your Thoughts on Illinois Gas Line
Published Date: 4/17/2025
Notice
Summary
Rockies Express Pipeline wants to build a new pipeline section in Macon County, Illinois, and the government is asking the public to share their thoughts on how this might affect the environment. People have until May 12, 2025, to send in comments that will help shape the environmental review. This project could change local land and water, so your voice matters before any big decisions or spending happen!
Analyzed Economic Effects
5 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.
Landowners May Be Asked for Easements
If you own land in the project area, Rockies Express may contact you to negotiate an easement to build and operate the pipeline. You do not have to sign an agreement, but if FERC approves the project the company could seek eminent domain in court and a judge would decide compensation under state law.
Construction Will Use and Permanently Keep Land
Building the project would use about 215 acres of land during construction and Rockies Express would permanently maintain about 94 acres for operations. This could change local land use and remove farmland or other property from prior uses.
Potential Environmental and Safety Impacts Identified
FERC staff identified issues they will study, including effects on agricultural operations and soils, the Lake Decatur crossing, and public safety. The environmental review will cover water, wetlands, wildlife, air quality, noise, cultural resources, and more.
Public Can Comment — Deadline May 12, 2025
You can submit written comments to FERC about environmental issues, alternatives, and ways to lessen impacts. Comments must be received by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on May 12, 2025 to be considered in the scoping process.
On-site Review Opportunity on May 7, 2025
FERC staff will visit representative locations for the project on May 7, 2025. Anyone may attend but must provide their own transportation and meet at the Decatur/Mt. Zion Hampton Inn at 8 a.m. CDT.
