Trucks Can Roll Past Silent Railroad Crossings Safely Now

Published Date: 5/30/2025

Proposed Rule

Summary

If you drive big commercial vehicles like buses or trucks carrying hazardous stuff, you usually have to stop at railroad crossings. Now, if the crossing has flashing lights or gates that aren’t active, you won’t have to stop every time. This change makes your drive smoother without risking safety, and it’s coming soon!

Stop rule lifted at inactive warning crossings

If you drive a large commercial motor vehicle (for example, a bus carrying passengers or a truck transporting certain hazardous materials), you would not have to stop at a railroad grade crossing when that crossing is equipped with an active warning device that is not in an activated state. The rule would add this exception to the current requirement that such drivers normally must stop before railroad tracks unless an exception applies.
