Gas Pipeline Push: FERC Schedules Eco-Check for Reliability Link
Published Date: 12/16/2025
Notice
Summary
Rockies Express Pipeline and partners want to build new natural gas facilities to deliver reliable energy to Colorado Springs. The government is preparing an environmental check and will share the results by July 2, 2026, with final decisions expected by September 30, 2026. This means local communities and energy users can expect clearer timelines and better energy service soon.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
New Gas Supply for Colorado Springs
If you live in Colorado Springs, the project would provide Colorado Springs Utilities up to 100,000 dekatherms per day (Dth/d) of firm natural gas transportation service and 50,000 Dth/d of no-notice service. This is intended to increase the amount of natural gas available to Colorado Springs Utilities.
Local Environmental and Landowner Concerns
Local commenters raised concerns about impacts on high priority habitats, threatened and endangered species, noxious weeds, aquifers, restoration of disturbed areas, facility lighting, landscape and soil disturbances (including in Elbert County), and effects on rural communities. Landowners and local groups identified these as primary issues to be addressed in the Environmental Assessment.
Public Review Timeline Set
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will issue an Environmental Assessment (EA) on July 2, 2026 with a 30-day public comment period, and the 90-day Federal Authorization decision deadline is September 30, 2026. Local communities and energy users will have those explicit dates to review and comment on the project's environmental analysis.
