Repatriation of the 74 associated funerary objects described in this notice may occur on or after January 16, 2026. Requests must be written and sent to Dr. Ben Secunda, NAGPRA Office Managing Director, University of Michigan, Office of Research (address and email provided in the notice).
University Identifies 74 Funerary Objects
The University of Michigan inventory identifies 74 associated funerary objects from four Illinois sites (Bedford, Blue Creek, Montezuma, and Manker in Pike County). The objects include earthenware sherds, lithics, bone, shell, and other materials, and are dated by consultation to the Middle to Late Woodland period.
Who May Request Repatriation
Any one or more of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in this notice may request repatriation; additionally, any lineal descendant or tribe not named may request repatriation if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are culturally affiliated. Joint requests are treated as a single request, and if competing requests arise the University of Michigan must determine the most appropriate requestor.
