Mississippi Energy Expansion: Public Weighs In on Eco Impacts

Published Date: 12/18/2025

Notice

Summary

Leaf River Energy Center wants to expand its energy facilities in three Mississippi counties, and the government is asking the public to share their thoughts on how this might affect the environment. People have until January 12, 2026, to send in comments that will help shape the official environmental review. This project could impact local communities and nature, so your voice matters before any big decisions or spending happen.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Easements and Eminent Domain Risk

If you own land in the project area in Mississippi, the pipeline company may contact you to negotiate an easement to construct, operate, and maintain facilities. If the Commission approves the project, the Natural Gas Act conveys the right of eminent domain to the company, and if you and the company do not reach an easement agreement the company could initiate condemnation proceedings where compensation would be determined by a judge under state law.

Land Disturbance and Permanent Footprint

Construction of the project would disturb about 32.0 acres of land and, after construction, about 18.0 acres would be maintained for permanent operation while the rest would be restored. This could change local land use near the facility sites in Smith, Jasper, and Clarke counties, Mississippi.

Increased Gas Storage to Improve Reliability

The project would increase certificated natural gas storage capacity at the New Home Salt Dome by 17.62 billion cubic feet (Bcf), including a new cavern with 12.52 Bcf of working gas capacity. According to the company, this expansion is intended to help provide natural gas grid reliability and reduce price volatility in the Gulf Coast natural gas market.
