Summary
The Department of Education is updating its data collection for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) 2027, which measures how well students across the country are doing in school. Schools, students, and parents will be part of this process, and the Department wants your feedback by February 17, 2026. This update aims to keep the survey smooth and useful without adding extra hassle or costs.

Schools and Governments Face Reporting Burden
State, local, and tribal governments (including schools) are listed as respondents to the NAEP 2027 information collection and the Department estimates 17,830 total annual responses and 10,625 total annual burden hours for this collection.
About 12,000 Grade 8 Students Assessed
NAEP 2027 plans a Grade 8 Science pilot that may assess about 12,000 students in roughly 308 public and private schools (which may include Bureau of Indian Education schools); NAEP does not provide scores for individual students or individual schools.
Assessment Delivered on School Devices or Chromebooks
NAEP 2027 will administer the assessment using school devices and the internet; for schools that cannot meet minimum specifications for school devices, NAEP will provide an alternate delivery model using NAEP Chromebooks. NAEP has transitioned to primarily using school devices with a staged approach beginning in 2026 and will run bridge and field studies to compare device models.
