NRC Eyes Safe Changes at Six Nuclear Power Plants

Published Date: 12/30/2025

Notice

Summary

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing requests to change operating licenses at six nuclear power plants, including Braidwood, Byron, Catawba, McGuire, and Limerick stations. These changes are considered safe with no big risks, but some details are sensitive, so special rules are set for who can see them. If you want to comment or get involved, act by early 2026—no big costs or delays expected.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

Rules for accessing sensitive SUNSI

If you believe you need access to Sensitive Unclassified Non-Safeguards Information (SUNSI) to participate, you must request access (the notice gives January 9, 2026 as an access-request deadline in the DATES section and the Order says requests must be made within 10 days of publication). The NRC will decide within 10 days whether you likely have standing and need the SUNSI; if access is granted, you may be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement or protective order and must file any SUNSI-based contentions within 25 days of receiving the information.

Public comment and hearing deadlines

You can submit public comments on these license amendment requests by January 29, 2026. If you want to request a hearing or petition to intervene, you must file by March 2, 2026. These deadlines are set in the Federal Register notice published December 30, 2025.

Amendments may be issued before hearings

The NRC may issue any of these license amendments before the end of the usual notice periods (including before the 60-day waiting period or the 30-day comment period) if the Commission makes a final No Significant Hazards Consideration (NSHC) determination or if delay would cause derating or shutdown. If a final NSHC determination is made, any hearing would take place after issuance of the amendment.
