I-285 Top End: 23.5‑Mile Express Lanes Approved

FHWA and GDOT approved the I-285 Top End project to build express lanes along approximately 23.5 miles in metro Atlanta: 19.0 miles on I-285 (South Atlanta Road to Henderson Road), 3.5 miles on SR 400 (south of the Glenridge Connector to near North Springs MARTA Station), and 1.0 mile on I-85 (I-285 to Pleasantdale Road). The FEIS/Record of Decision was approved on October 16, 2025, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued an Individual Permit on January 8, 2026; the project includes modification or replacement of some overpass bridges and is intended to provide passenger vehicles, transit riders, and commercial vehicles an effective transportation alternative to address unreliable trip times and lack of regional connectivity.

Deadline to File Legal Challenges

The Federal agencies' approvals for the Top End I-285 project are final and a claim seeking judicial review will be barred unless filed on or before June 22, 2026. If another Federal law allows a shorter filing period (less than 150 days), that shorter period applies.
