Grand Gulf Nuclear Permit Renewal: 20 More Years Planned
Published Date: 1/27/2026
Notice
Summary
System Energy Resources Inc. wants to renew their Grand Gulf Early Site Permit for 20 more years, letting them keep planning for a nuclear plant at the site. The current permit expires in April 2027, so this renewal keeps the project on track without extra costs right now. People have until March 30, 2026, to ask for a hearing or get involved if they want to speak up.
Analyzed Economic Effects
4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 3 mixed.
Renewal Seeks Exemption To Defer Updates
SERI requested an exemption from the 10 CFR 52.29(a) requirement to include updated general, site safety, environmental, and other information in its ESP renewal; the application does not update that information now. The NRC stated that matters not updated in this renewal would not be granted finality under 10 CFR 52.39 and could be addressed later in an ESP amendment, a construction permit application, or a combined license application.
Environmental Review Still Undetermined
SERI did not include an environmental report with its renewal application, and the NRC staff is still determining the type of environmental review required under the National Environmental Policy Act. The NRC will complete an environmental review and document its findings in accordance with 10 CFR part 51.
Grand Gulf ESP Renewal Docketed
System Energy Resources, Inc. (SERI) applied to renew Grand Gulf Early Site Permit No. ESP-002 for an additional 20 years. The NRC has accepted the renewal application for docketing (Docket No. 52-009) and will begin a detailed review; acceptance for docketing is not a decision to issue a renewed permit.
Public Hearing Petition Deadline
Any person whose interest may be affected may file a request for a hearing and petition to intervene by March 30, 2026 (60 days after publication). State or local governmental bodies and Federally recognized Tribes may file a petition by the same deadline or participate as non-parties under specified rules.
