Consolidated Tape Association Approves Near-Nonstop Stock Data Flow

Published Date: 1/27/2026

Notice

Summary

The big stock market players just agreed to keep their price and trade info flowing almost nonstop—from Sunday night to Friday evening—with short hourly breaks on weeknights for tech updates. This means traders and investors get fresher data for longer hours, helping markets run smoother. The change kicks in soon, so everyone involved should get ready for these extended hours and brief nightly pauses.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.

Market data available almost nonstop

The Consolidated Tape Processor would receive and disseminate quotation and last-sale information from 9:00 p.m. ET Sunday through 8:00 p.m. ET Friday. The change is expected to be implemented in December 2026, subject to readiness and market-conditions tests.

Nightly one-hour processing pause

On Monday through Thursday the Processor would pause operations for one hour beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET to allow technical refreshes; the Participants may shorten that pause if technically feasible with at least 90 days' notice. During those pauses quotation and last-sale dissemination would be unavailable for that hour.

Off-hours trades labeled and excluded

Transactions executed outside 9:30 a.m. ET–4:00 p.m. ET will be designated as ".T" trades. Such off‑hours trades will be included in total trade volume for net distributable operating revenue but will not be included in the calculation of the daily high, low, or last-sale.

Trading day tied to 8:00 p.m. ET boundary

Under the amendment, a trade date would start at 8:00 p.m. ET on the day before Regular Trading Hours and end at 8:00 p.m. ET on the same day as Regular Trading Hours begin (for example, Wednesday's trading day would begin at 8:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday and end at 8:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday).
