Free inspection and replacement program
If you own one of the recalled Shimano 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech II cranksets (models Ultegra FC-6800, FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-9000, FC-R9100, or FC-R9100P), Shimano voluntarily agreed to start an inspection and replacement program and will replace any Subject Products that fail inspection free of charge. The Agreement states the inspection/replacement program was part of Shimano's corrective actions and that, since the program began, there have been no reported injuries.
Recall covers ~680,000 cranksets and incident reports
The Settlement states that between 2012 and 2023 about 680,000 of the specified 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech II cranksets were imported and distributed in the United States, and the Commission and Shimano jointly announced a recall of the Subject Products on September 21, 2023. The Agreement notes Shimano received at least 4,519 incidents of cranksets separating and six reported injuries related to those products.
Ongoing compliance program and reporting requirements
Under the Agreement Shimano must maintain a CPSA compliance program with written policies, tracking systems, employee training, confidential reporting mechanisms, senior management oversight, and an annual internal audit. Shimano must submit sworn reports describing its compliance program and audits annually for three (3) years, with the first report due 30 days after the close of the first 12-month reporting period beginning on the date of the Commission's Final Order, and must retain CPSA compliance-related records for at least five (5) years.
