Sabine Pass LNG Expansion Draft EIS Open for Comments

Published Date: 4/8/2026

Notice

Summary

Sabine Pass is planning a big upgrade by adding new gas processing units and building a 56-mile pipeline plus compressor stations in Louisiana and Texas. This project will boost natural gas export capacity and impact local communities and the environment. People have until May 26, 2026, to share their thoughts before final decisions and investments move forward.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Construction will cause short-term local impacts

The Project includes a new 55.6-mile, 48-inch natural gas pipeline, compressor stations, and three new liquefaction trains near communities in Liberty, Chambers, and Jefferson Counties, Texas and Cameron and Beauregard Parishes, Louisiana. The draft EIS says most environmental effects would be limited and temporary or short-term during construction, so you may see construction noise, traffic, or other short-term disturbances while work happens.

Some long-term environmental changes possible

The draft EIS finds some long-term or permanent effects could occur to wetlands, forested lands, visual resources, and air quality from the Project in the project area. The Commission staff concluded that, with the Applicants' avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures and recommended conditions, effects would be less than significant for most resources.

Preliminary safeguards reduce hazardous risk

Based on a preliminary engineering and technical review, the draft EIS finds there are acceptable layers of protection or safeguards that would reduce the risk of a potentially hazardous scenario developing into an event that could impact the offsite public. This is a staff finding in the draft EIS, not a final approval.
