Energy Aid Reports Slim Down: Less Paper, Same Warmth
Published Date: 4/9/2026
Notice
Summary
The government wants to bring back the yearly report on families helped by the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). States and territories must submit this report by September 2026, but with fewer questions to make it easier and faster. This helps keep the energy aid flowing smoothly to those who need it most without wasting time or money.

Annual LIHEAP Household Report Required
State governments, tribal governments, U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia must submit the Annual Report on Households Assisted by LIHEAP; the next report is due September 2026 and the current OMB expiration date is March 31, 2026.
Less Household Data Collected
The report form is revised to remove questions on sex, race, and ethnicity and to drop data elements tied to expired CARES Act and American Rescue Plan Act LIHEAP supplemental funding.
Reduced Reporting Time Estimates
Estimated time per response is reduced: long format (52 respondents) now 41 hours each (previously 67 hours), short format (133 respondents) now 6 hours each (previously 10 hours), and household application responses estimated at 0.3 hours each for an annual 6,160,000 responses. Total annual burden hours are estimated at 1,850,930.
Tribal Reporting Limited to Household Counts
Indian tribal grant recipients are required to submit only the number of households, by funding source, receiving heating, cooling, energy crisis, and/or weatherization benefits using the Annual LIHEAP Household Report.
