VA restarts GI Bill eligibility checks

The Department of Veterans Affairs is restarting a computer matching program to check DoD personnel records against VA claims for the Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty and Selected Reserve) and the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The match is intended to verify eligibility and keep benefit payments accurate and fair; the program will start at least 30 days after the April 10, 2026 publication and will run for 18 months (with possible 12-month renewal).

VA-DoD sharing of personal identifiers

Under the re-established match, DoD will provide VA eligibility records (from DEERS) and VA will match benefit records (VA system 58VA21/22/28) using personal identifiers including Social Security Number (SSN), DoD EDIPI (VA ID), date of birth, last name, and file identification number. The match covers Veterans, servicemembers, reservists, and dependents who have applied for or are receiving the listed education benefits and will run for 18 months starting no sooner than 30 days after April 10, 2026.
