NWOS Extended to Finish 2024–2028
The Forest Service is requesting renewal so the National Woodland Owner Survey (NWOS) can complete its current 2024–2028 cycle. Approval would allow the NWOS to continue collecting national data through 2028 under the existing approval that currently expires on 2027-05-31.
Time Burden for Forest Landowners
If you are selected for the NWOS, the Forest Service estimates responses will take 25 minutes for families, individuals, and corporate ownerships; 60–120 minutes for Tribal entities; and 15 minutes for public entities. The survey estimates 19,447 ownerships contacted annually and a total annual respondent burden of 3,090 hours.
Owners Identified from Public Records
The NWOS will use remotely sensed data and public records to identify forested points and the owners of record, including names and addresses, and those landowners will be contacted for the survey.
Public Comment and Data Disclosure Rules
The Forest Service asks for public comments by June 12, 2026. Comments, including names and addresses when provided, may be made public and posted to relevant websites; email addresses submitted with comments will be captured and included in the public docket.
