Self-Driving Trucks Get Flashing Light Pass from Feds?

Published Date: 4/15/2026

Notice

Summary

Aurora Operations, Inc. wants a 5-year pass to use flashing cab-mounted warning lights instead of the usual reflective triangles or flares when their self-driving trucks stop. This change could affect other companies with similar Level 4 automated trucks if they tell FMCSA before using it. The government is asking for public thoughts by May 15, 2026, before deciding if this safer, high-tech switch gets the green light.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Five-Year Exemption for Flashing Cab Beacons

Aurora asks FMCSA for a five-year exemption to let Level 4 automated commercial trucks use cab-mounted flashing amber beacons (class 1 per SAE J595) instead of placing 3 reflective triangles or at least 6 fusees when stopped. The request would apply to Aurora and to other motor carriers operating Level 4 ADS-equipped CMVs if they notify FMCSA in writing before operating under the exemption.

Eliminates Need for Drivers to Exit Vehicle

Aurora says using cab-mounted beacons removes the need for a person to exit a stopped truck onto the shoulder or traffic lane. Aurora reported using the beacons October 10, 2025 through January 9, 2026 on 34 CMVs that traveled over 500,000 miles, with beacons active nearly 10 hours and no reported crashes while using them.

Request to Cover Double/Triple Trailers, Tank Vehicles

Aurora asks that the exemption allow Level 4 ADS-equipped CMVs to operate with double/triple trailers and tank vehicles under the exemption, which the current waivers do not allow. Aurora proposed terms similar to its waivers but specifically requests these vehicle types be included.

Reporting Requirement for Beacon Use

Under the existing waiver (which Aurora says would inform proposed exemption terms), motor carriers using cab-mounted beacons must report any crashes that occurred while the beacons were activated or should have been activated and submit a Waiver Term Report with performance data of the beacons. Aurora reports no crashes under the waivers to date.
