Limited HALEU Shipments Approved
The NRC exempted Urenco USA to use DN30 certified packages with 30B cylinders to transport uranium hexafluoride (UF6) enriched at greater than 5 but less than 10 weight percent U-235. The exemption is limited to approximately 40 to 50 cylinders for shipments during calendar years 2026 through 2027 to a single customer, allowing those contracted HALEU deliveries to proceed while a new approved package is manufactured.
NRC Finds No Significant Environmental Impact
The NRC completed an environmental assessment and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for this exemption on April 15, 2026, concluding that transporting UF6 enriched >5 but <10 wt.% U-235 in the specified 30B/DN30 configuration will not result in radiation exposures to the public or workers that exceed regulatory limits. The staff also found criticality safety acceptable and noted no physical changes to the DN30 package are proposed.
