314 Funerary Objects Available for Repatriation

If you are a member of the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, or the Shawnee Tribe, 314 associated funerary objects have been identified as culturally affiliated and may be returned to the tribes on or after May 18, 2026. The objects include specific items (for example, shell beads, projectile points, ceramic vessels) and are currently part of a collection documented in the notice.

Who May Request Repatriation and How Claims Work

You may request repatriation if you are one of the three named tribes, or if you are a lineal descendant or an Indian Tribe/organization (not listed) that can show cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. If competing requests are submitted, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District, will decide the most appropriate requestor, and joint repatriation requests are treated as a single request.

Where to Send Requests and Where Items Are Located

To request repatriation, send written requests to Ms. Ashley Taylor, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District PMD-R, 502 Eighth Street, Huntington, WV 25701, or email [email protected]. The collection is currently located at the Veterans Curation Lab in Alexandria, Virginia.
