Repatriation of 995 Funerary Items

If you are a member or lineal descendant of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, Kaw Nation (Oklahoma), or Pawnee Nation (Oklahoma), the Kansas State Historical Society will repatriate 995 associated funerary objects to affiliated tribes. Repatriation may occur on or after May 18, 2026, and requests may be submitted by the named tribes, lineal descendants, or other tribes/organizations that show cultural affiliation; KSHS will resolve competing requests.

Condition and Safety of Returned Items

The notice states that, unless noted, no known hazardous substances were used to treat the associated funerary objects; some ceramic items were reconstructed with an unspecified glue. This informs requestors about the general treatment and condition of the items before repatriation.
