Published Date: 4/21/2026

Notice

Summary

Kairos Power is getting the green light to take more time—until April 2029—to finish building their Hermes test reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission checked the plan and found no big environmental problems, so the project can move forward without delays. This means local communities and clean energy fans can look forward to new nuclear tech without worrying about extra risks or costs right now.

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Construction Completion Date Extended

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved Kairos Power's request to extend the latest date to finish building the Hermes test reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from December 31, 2026, to April 30, 2029. The amendment only gives Kairos more time to complete construction and does not authorize any new work beyond the existing Construction Permit No. CPTR-6. Denial of the request would have left the licensee unable to complete construction and begin operation.

NRC Finds No Significant Environmental Impact

The NRC completed an environmental assessment and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on April 21, 2026, for the requested extension. The NRC concluded the extension would not change radioactive releases, land disturbance, air or water quality, ecological resources, historic properties, or socioeconomic conditions as previously evaluated in NUREG-2263, and therefore will not prepare an environmental impact statement.
