Automatic TPD discharge notices for veterans
If VA has designated you as 100% service‑connected disabled or totally disabled based on individual unemployability and you have title IV student loans, the Department of Education will send you a notice and will discharge your title IV loans no earlier than 61 days after that notice. You can choose to have your loans discharged earlier or you can opt out within 60 days of the Department's notification.
VA data accepted instead of VA Statement
The Department will accept VA matched data in place of a borrower’s submitted VA Statement when processing a TPD loan discharge, which simplifies the application process for eligible borrowers. This change is part of the matching program that begins June 1, 2026 and runs for 18 months.
VA shares personal disability data with ED
VA will share veterans' name, date of birth, Social Security number, 100% disabling or unemployability rating, and disability determination date with the Department of Education as part of this matching program. Those data elements will be used to identify borrowers eligible for TPD discharge under the program that begins June 1, 2026 and lasts 18 months.
