FAA Orders Brake Checks on Luxury Jets After Tire Burst Scare
Published Date: 4/23/2026
Proposed Rule
Summary
The FAA wants Bombardier BD-700-1A10 and BD-700-1A11 airplane owners to check if their brake control units (BCUs) are safe after a tire burst incident. If the BCU is faulty, it must be replaced, and no more bad parts can be installed. Comments on this safety fix are open until June 8, 2026, and it could mean some maintenance costs but keeps everyone flying safe.

Analyzed Economic Effects
2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
Estimated Compliance and Replacement Costs
The FAA estimates this proposed AD would affect 42 U.S.-registered airplanes. The estimated inspection labor is 2 work-hours at $85/hour = $170 per airplane (total $7,140 for U.S. operators), and any on-condition replacement could cost up to $430,259 per airplane (labor $170 plus parts up to $430,089). The manufacturer may cover some or all costs under warranty, which could reduce the operator’s expense.
Mandatory BCU Inspection and Replacement
If you operate a Bombardier BD-700-1A10 or BD-700-1A11 airplane, the FAA proposes you must inspect to see if brake control unit (BCU) part number GW415-7125-7 is installed, replace affected BCUs with P/N GW415-7125-9, and you may not install the affected P/N GW415-7125-7. The action responds to an incident where loss of a 5V power supply in the BCU wheel control card could let residual current cause uncommanded brake pressure and a main landing gear tire burst.
